The boat rocked, and Kathryn felt sick to her stomach. She hated riding on boats; she always had. She'd never actually got sea sick before, but she always did feel kind of bad. When the boat finally docked, Katie stepped off the deck of the boat that had brought her here to the Golden Islands. 'Finally! I'm so excited dad finally let me come here.' She smiled, looking for someone to point her in the direction of Professor Redwood's laboratory, so she could get her first Pokemon from the Golden Islands. An instant pang of sadness clutched her heart as she though of her Swinub back home. She had loved the Pokemon, and hoped to get one here. But, she ripped her mind away from her home; 'I gotta focus on the present and future, not the past. I hope I can get a ghost Pokemon here, those are just the best! I love them to death; they're so sneaky and can dissapear at any time.' She ended her fantasy when she say a man, one of the people who navigated the ship, standing nearby. "Um, excuse me. Could you please point me in the direction of the Pokemon Lab?" The man smiled, his finger lifting to point into the city. "It's the one that's a bit taller than the other ones... See it?" He asked, and Kat nodded. "Thanks!" Katie bolted down the streets, toward the lab. She was finally going to get a Pokemon, and nothing was going to stop her. She arrived at the door of the lab, and pulled it open without a second thought. Her entry set off a small rustle in the almost silent lab, and she called out, "Uhh, is anyone here? I'm looking to get my first Pokemon... Professor Redwood?"

[ PROFESSOR REDWOOD ] The boat rides always seemed to take a little out of the Professor. He was getting a little old for this, although he'd never admit it outright. He had to keep his image, see. Would never let his aides start getting on his back about his age. Besides, he wouldn't even listen to what they said. He'd be fine with a little rest and a sandwich. He sat the desk in the front room, leaning back in the swivel chair. His eyes were trained on a mini-tv sitting at the corner of his desk. He couldn't bring his Milotic inside, so instead he let her out in the ocean out back and had hired someone to connect a camera so that he could keep watch. Slowly, his usually harsh features softened, as he watched the graceful creature dive in and out of the clear ocean water. He let his mind wander back to when he had traveled throughout the Golden Island, all with his Feebas, who turned into his beautiful Milotic. He rather missed those days.
The Professor was quite startled when the door opened, and thinking it was one of his aides, he quickly turned off the tv and straightened, face hardening again. When he saw the unfamiliar face peek in, he loosened his tensed muscles, although he still held his trademark scowl. Pushing the chair back, he stood up, boots clunking against the ground. "Quiet, kid. No need to yell, I can hear jus' fine," he said, shrugging his shoulders. He looked almost intimidating, with his scowl and official looking clothes. To be honest, he looked more like a rough sailor than a professor.
When he was sure he had the girl's attention, he started for another room, where the starter Pokemon were held. One wall had what looked like a large bookshelf, although it was lined with Pokeball instead, with a few empty spots. He rummaged around in what looked like a closet, and came out with an armful of Pokeballs, which were placed where there weren't any Pokeballs. It was a wonder as to how he managed to do this without having to check that it was the right Pokemon. "You can choose your Pokemon here," he grunted, before heading to a cupboard where he withdrew a rather large bag. He held out the bag to the girl. "Here."
Quite the man of few words.

Kathryn jumped at the Professor's voice. She quickly recovered, a smile brewing on her face. "Oh, uh, sorry, I didn't see you there, Professor Redwood." She said, embarrased to have not seen the Professor right in front of her eyes. Then, she noticed his clothing; he didn't look too much like a professor, in the usual white coat. He wore more pirate-like attire, with his billowing cape-like jacket that opened in the front, leaving his chest showing. And, to top it off, he wore a white ship-captian hat, which totally completed the look. His composure was that of an aging man; not old and weathered, yet not young and entergetic. The professor's face was in a scowl, making him look almost intimidating; but, Katie Jo wasn't the one to be scared by a pokemon professor. The professor stepped toward a room, and Katie followed him, peeking at the room he went into. It was full of Pokeballs; they lined the walls on shelves, and only a few were missing from the ranks. Katie watched as he grabbed an armfull of red and white spheres, and set them on some sort of table, where there were no other ones. Katie looked at them longingly. She would gladly take all of them, and complete a great team of Pokemon on her first day, but she knew that wouldn't be the case. She would have to pick between more than twenty Pokemon, and, since she didn't research the Golden Islands one bit, she had no clue what they were. The prefessor grabbed a rather large bag as Katie reached for one of the Pokeballs. The Professor handed her the bag, and she guessed this would be what she would carry on her journey, and already filled with her starter pack that she was supposed to be getting. Katie rolled the Pokeball around in the palm of her hand, and the button clicked, releasing a red ray of light. "Oops." Katie muttered, as a floating Pokemon appeared from the red light. It was dark purple, and had a lighter purple gas floating around it. "A ghost Pokemon?" She guessed. She hadn't studied Pokemon too much, so she didn't know many of them, although this one looked as if it was a ghost-type, or maybe poison. 'This Pokemon's beautiful! Well, in a weird scary kind of way. I'd love to have this one, but I need to see the other one's first.'

[ PROFESSOR REDWOOD ] The Professor quietly stood by a wall as the girl browsed through the Pokeballs. He was a little curious as to which Pokemon the girl would choose, but he wasn't about to start and try to influence her decision. That was up to her to make and more fitting for fate to take its course. Of course, the Professor didn't believe in things like that, but one couldn't be too careful. When she accidentally released the Gastly from its Pokeball, he raised an eyebrow, but didn't say anything against her actions. Instead, he shifted his position and added, "It's a Gastly, a dual type of Poison and Ghost." He glanced at the girl for a moment before continuing: "It's a Gas Pokemon, and although it's a Poison type, it doesn't learn any Poison-type moves. At least, not through level up. It evolves into a Haunter, and then a Gengar if you trade it."
He was then quiet, and settled back against the wall, where he watched the girl with indifferent eyes. He might seem like a scary pirate, but he really was a Professor. It also seemed that unless he was talking about Pokemon, he rarely spoke more than one sentence at a time. Quite the strange man to be considered for the job of being the Golden Island's Pokemon Professor. With a gruff grunt, he added, "You can keep looking if you want, but I suggest you recall the Gastly before it gets attached to you." With a hand, he gestured to the Ghost Pokemon, who had started to inch closer to the girl, looking at her with very curious eyes. This would be the first trainer the Pokemon would have seen, and might have already formed a bond. Which of course, wouldn't be very good if the girl decided to choose another Pokemon. To be on the safe side, the Professor would refrain from telling this to the girl. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

"It's a Gastly, a dual type of Poison and Ghost." The professor had spoke, so Katie turned to look at him, when he continued. "It's a Gas Pokemon, and although it's a Poison type, it doesn't learn any Poison-type moves. At least, not through level up. It evolves into a Haunter, and then a Gengar if you trade it." Kat stared at the Pokemon; that was strange that it wouldn't even learn any poison-type moves, though it was poison. Katie noticed the Pokemon staring back at her, and almost jumped when the professor talked again. "You can keep looking if you want, but I suggest you recall the Gastly before it gets attached to you." "Oh, uh, yeah. Okay." Kat pointed the Pokeball toward the Pokemon, and tossed the red and white sphere toward it. A beam came out, much like when the Pokemon, Gastly, had come out of the Pokeball the first time. The Pokemon was gulped into the hungry Pokeball, and it landed squarely in her awaiting hand. "I'd like to look at some more, if I could." But, Katie being Katie, she went ahead and grabbed three other Pokeballs, not waiting for the Professor's answer. She set the Gastly's Pokeball on the opposite side of the table, setting it apart from the others. It looked like a really great Pokemon, and it evolved twice, giving her three Pokemon that could be great for contests. She clicked each of the three Pokeballs buttons, releasing three more Pokemon. One of them, the Cyndaquil, she recognized from her father's Quilava that she played with when she was younger. The other two, though, she did not recognize, though they looked like a steel-type and a flying type. She glanced at them, but none of them sparked her interest much. She returned them to their Pokeballs, and did the same thing with the other Pokeballs; she took three at a time, and looked at them, only to return them to their Pokeballs and look at the next three. When she noticed she had seen all thwety-five, only two of them stuck out in her memory: the Gastly, a ghost- and poison-type, and the Charmander, a fire-type she had recognized from one of the books back at her school that she had read due to boredom. "I still really like that Gastly. But, could you tell me what moves it knows?" Kat asked, eyeing the Pokeball she had set aside from the others, marking that it was the Gastly.

The Professor had closed his eyes and was almost snoring when he finally heard the girl talk again. He blinked and stood up straight, rather embarrassed. It seemed as if he had been more tired than he'd thought. She was still staring at the Pokeball which held Gastly, and it looked as if she held a real interest in the Pokemon. Professor Redwood would never understand, of course.
He didn't like Ghost Pokemon. That was just it. They were strange, what with their long, scary faces, and boring attacks. Or maybe Professor Redwood was scared of Ghost Pokemon because he had been attacked by one once when he was young.
"Ah, the Gastly. Well, I'm pretty sure it knows Hypnosis. That's a move that makes the opponent fall asleep; well, it also knows lick, I'm sure. And, ah, it also knows Spite, which is an interesting move; it cuts around 4 PP from the opponent," the Professor had become a bit engrossed in his speech and had actually smiled, but quickly returned it back to his normal frown.
Nobody knew why the Professor never smiled, but it was strange and nobody questioned him, either. It was as if he wanted to smile, and Lucy would often try to make him smile, but he could never quite make it to that laughing point unless he was talking about Pokemon. And he loved talking about Pokemon; no matter Ghost-type or not.
"You finished yet, kid?"
With a sigh, he waited for her choice. He could barely remember his type of excitement when he was young [or at least he tried not to], but he knew what it felt like to have a Pokemon. However, he guessed that she was probably feeling a sense of exhilaration and pride, scared for what the future would hold and so forth.
He sighed. He wished she would hurry up.
Because when Professor Redwood started thinking philosophy, something was wrong.

Kathryn smiled, thinking about the Pokemon, the Ghastly, and how it could make her a great coordinator. Hypnosis could be a good move: make the opposing Pokemon go to sleep, and show off while they didn't have a chance. And, then there was Lick. Katy didn't know what Lick really did, but she guessed Gastly would lick the opponent, and something would happen. And, lastly, there was Spite. It could make the other Pokemon lose PP, by around four. That could work well if they used a really good move, so they couldn't use it much again. When Katie looked at the Professor, he was smiling. It looked as though he didn't smile much, the wrinkles of a scowl forever staining his face. The smile quickly faded when he stopped talking about the Gastly, though. Kat wondered if the only thing he liked was Pokemon: it seemed like it could be true. "You finished yet, kid?" A small wrinkle appeared on Kat's forehead as she scrunched her face, thinking about what Pokemon she wanted. When she was just about to speak, the Professor sighed. 'Why doesn't he just yell at me to hurry?' Kat thought, but hurried to wiped the thought from her mind. She was trying not to think like that; she was trying to think positive, the 'Is the cup half-empty or half-full?' kind of thing. "Yes sir. Um, I'm gonna' take the Gastly, if that's fine with you."
Kat switched the bag the professor had given her earlier to the other shoulder; it was starting to make her shoulder hurt. She was about to peek inside to see what there was, but she decided not to; it might seem that she was being rude or greedy, and she definitely didn't want that. [/blockquote]

The Professor groaned silently in his head; he really couldn't wait for this girl to get up and go because his head hurt like hell. Really, why did he have to deal with the new coordinators? Kai and Lucy should be the ones doing this kind of stuff; it was embarrassing and he hated serving annoying little kids. He closed his eyes and tried to do the breathing exercises his mom had told him to do whenever he was frustrated; which was often. The Professor was not a patient, loving, Professor. He was hard and he was extremely strict when it came to working, though he was more soft towards his Aides. Lucy and Kai had become his 'family' of some sort; they were the ones that cooked for him when he was sick. It was strange really, that his real family couldn't connect with him the same way Lucy and Kai did, but maybe it was because of work and how they had to work together to get things done.
Snapping back into reality, the Professor blinked and motioned towards her.
"Then take it, for Arceus' sake." He said, though for a second he thought it was a bit too harsh. As he caught a glance of her shifting the bag from shoulder to shoulder and looking at it wonderingly, he sighed. "That bag contains a few Pokeballs, potions, a map, and everything you need which is why it's so important." For a second, his mind flashed back to the time when he had first received his Starter Pack along with his new Feebas. It had been a dream come true and he had been one of those few coordinators that actually appreciated these things. Young people these days. He scowled once again. Unlike what most people thought, Professor Ben Redwood loved to daydream. He daydreamed all the time; about things long past and times where everyone had to bow to their elders and where there were no such things as punks and emos. But those days, unfortunately, were long gone.[/blockquote] CLAIMED BY VIVI <3

[[ooc: l.o.l., you didn't need to say anything, you could've took the pokemon and went. oh yes, and sorry about the prof. being mean because i have no muse as well.]] The Professor sighed for what seemed like the thirtieth time since this annoying girl had walked into the door. It seemed as if she would never stop talking and quite frankly he was sick of it. As she started speaking again, he decided that he was probably going to push her out a window if she spoke one more word and didn't get the door.
"There aren't any new Pokemon that have been discovered at the moment. But these islands have Pokemon from all the regions, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh."
As for the question about Ghastly evolving; well that was what really ticked the Professor off. He frowned, and for a second he thought about slapping her, because that was nothing less than a horrible question to ask. To think, she had just gotten the Ghastly and now she wanted to know how to evolve it? In truth, the girl had seemed an okay person at first, the Professor just wasn't in a good mood, but now the girl had become some kind of a monster. How could she think about the Pokemon evolving when she first got it? She should be trying to bond with the Pokemon, learn how to take care of it. Professor Redwood snorted in disgust and shook his head in disbelief. The coordinators nowadays were nothing special; they were the equivalent of those runaway punks from his time.
"Ghastly do evolve. But you just got it, why the heck are you thinking about evolving it? Maybe you should try bonding with it first?" He spat out madly.
His eyes almost seemed to glow with anger. Professor Redwood, though silent and resilient in most cases, was highly opinionated when it came to the world of Pokemon. Pokemon deserved rights, he said. To him, Pokemon were more important than any child, any family member. Pokemon shouldn't be given to people not worthy.
This situation was an example, to say the least.

Kathryn Jo Boyde frowned. She didn't really mean for the Professor to get mad. He was practically yelling at her; scolding her like a bad father would. 'Well, thanks to that freak, I'm gonna' have a bad day now.' She thought, thinking of just yelling right back at him. But, that wouldn't solve anything. She had to be calm, and try to make it seem like it didn't hurt her.
Kathryn turned away from the professor, and mumbled, "Sorry." It was low and dark; if Kat was an actual cat, it would've been a growl. She started from the room, her bag's strap hanging over her shoulder. It was bouncing around, and she had to grab it so it wouldn't move. When she reached the entrance of the laboratory, she looked back to see if the professor was following. When she didn't see him, she turned back around, and walked toward the dock, rather briskly. She wasn't about to let her Gastly out yet; she didn't want it to see her like this: angry.
A bench was settled nearby, so she went toward it. She decided she'd wait there until the boat was ready to leave. After a little while of sitting on the bench, she felt calmer, and she was ready to meet her new Pokemon, that was oh-so-rudely given to her from that professor. She sighed, and grabbed the Pokeball from her bag. As she reached in, she saw a few things in there; all the stuff the professor had said would be there. With the red and white ball in her hand, she clicked the button, and the Gastly appeared in front of her. "Hi... Relic." She thought the name would fit the Gastly. She had always liked it, but didn't know when she would ever use it. But, it was perfect now.
